Ever since the dawn of talking pictures in the late 1920's, when silent films were no more, the artists responsible for producing a film's sound have to cover a wide range of talents ... from creating sound effects that may have never even existed when the piece of film was actually shot, to making sure all the various dialogue, effects, and music are all level. The sound for a film is as critically important as a film's visuals, and over the years, these were the achievements in sound that the Academy found to be the best.
