Initially presented as an award for sound effects editing, it has since become known as simply Sound Editing. Much like the film editor, the Sound Editor has to match the sound for the film to the cut of the film, creating layered mixes which must seamlessly meld together. For their achievements, the Academy has found these to be the best. This award was discontinued in 2021 when it was decided that there should be only one award for Sound, simply Best Sound.
