Thankfully, the Academy always remembers that filmmaking doesn't just occur in the United States. Through the presentation of the Foreign Film Oscar, audiences can be reminded that there are some truly extraordinary works of art coming from so many different countries. For several years, the Academy would award a special honorary Oscar for foreign films, but finally made it a competitive category in 1948.
