The opening credit sequence with LaMotta alone in the ring
F R O M
RAGING BULL (1980)

In an interview several years back with film critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel, director Martin Scorsese was asked to pick one image from all of his films which represents his entire canvas as a director or his entire image. Scorsese picked this sequence, the opening credit sequence to his 1980 classic RAGING BULL, and I pick this sequence for the same exact reasons. The loneliness in that ring, as we see Jake LaMotta, played by Robert De Niro, moving in slow motion all alone within that ring, shot in stark black and white footage, reveals the loneliness and desperation inherent in almost all of Scorsese's film characters. It's the image of one man fighting with his own personal demons, and sets into motion this powerful and singular film achievement.
