The scenes in the Vietnamese village
F R O M
PLATOON (1986)

These scenes are the true epitome of the true chaos of the Vietnam War experience and in particular, this platoon who has a war-scarred madman as its leader. Lieutenant Barnes, played by Tom Berenger, leads his platoon into a Vietnamese prison camp attempting to find weapons, and is so possessed in doing so, he kills a man's wife when she arrives trying to save her husband. It's a shocking scene. The man still won't reveal any information, so Barnes grabs the man's young daughter and holds a gun to her head and is almost ready to shoot her when Elias, the other leader of the platoon, arrives and stops this madness. They eventually torch this seemingly innocent village, and in a classic image, the platoon marches away from the village as the fire grows and the village is destroyed. This scene was one of many in this seminal classic which for the first time showed the true brutality of the Vietnam War instead of glorifying it.
