Martin Scorsese as a disturbed passenger in the back of De Niro's taxicab describing a murder he's about to commit
This sequence was a dark and intriguing film sequence from one of Martin Scorsese's greatest film achievements, TAXI DRIVER. In it, Scorsese himself plays a disturbed passenger in Travis Bickle's cab who asks him to stop right outside an apartment building. He tells Bickle to let the meter run while they sit there and he soon begins to describe how he's going to kill his wife, who is sleeping with another man up in that apartment. What's disturbing about the scene is how this passenger describes in detail how he's going to kill his wife -- "I'm going to kill her with a 357 Magnum, I'm going to kill her with that gun. Have you seen what a 357 Magnum will do to a woman's face? It'll fucking blow it apart -- now have you ever seen what a 357 Magnum will do to a woman's pussy? Now that you should see" -- it's a shocking reminder of the horror in the world, and how much of it Travis Bickle sees every night in his taxi. And especially to have the knowledge ahead of time that someone is going to be murdered makes it an intriguing scene. |
