Pacino and De Niro meet for the first time on screen
F R O M
HEAT (1995)

I have to include this scene, and yes, mostly because it was the much publicized first on-screen sequence which brought the two greatest of contemporary actors together, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Even though they had appeared in the same film before, GODFATHER PART II, they never were actually in the same scene, but finally in Michael Mann's powerful L.A. crime saga, they were. It's a five minute scene midway through the movie where the cop, played by Pacino, asks the leader of a crime ring, played by De Niro, to talk with him for a little bit over a cup of coffee. The scene is integral to the film because it shows both cop and criminal talking about their various lives, and really seeming to have a certain respect for the other man. But to see these two incredible actors in a scene together simply is one of those celluloid moments that remains very precious. It is interesting to note however that a lot of people have said that it really does not show Pacino and De Niro actually together in one shot, because we always see either Pacino talking and the back of De Niro's head, or the back of Pacino's head while De Niro is talking, so I guess the debate can go on.
